When we join Rotary, we are given a classification based on our vocation or profession. This information is shared with Club members and usually we are asked to give a vocational talk during a regular Club meeting. Additionally, many members (or spouses) have a hobby, sport or are engaged in some other activity that quite often is of interest to members. This past Wednesday Barry Edmundson’s wife Robin gave an interesting and insightful talk on her art hobby and displayed some of her artwork. One piece of botanical artwork that was on display will be donated to the Novus Foundation for auction.
Regarding members’ interests and hobbies, last year an online survey was sent out to members but only a few responded. We’re still interested in receiving this information and here’s a link to the online survey; and a Word version is also attached here for your convenience. It will only take a few minutes to complete and the information will be helpful.
Last Wednesday afternoon, Janet and Robert Grundy together with Gabrielle and myself had a very interesting tour of the new Mark Moran Warrawee aged care facility. Peter Smith was able to take the tour the previous day. This state-of-the-art facility includes a café, hydrotherapy pool, gym, cinema, hair salon and indoor and outdoor recreational space. There’s on-site nursing care. The first resident has just moved into this new 104 bed home.
As a Rotary Centenary project, we submitted a proposal that went to State Government and to Ku-ring-gai Council for a major upgrade to the laneway in Wahroonga that runs from the station end of Railway Ave to Warwilla Ave. The laneway that runs behind the shops is State Rail property and maintained by Ku-ring-gai Council. Included in our proposal was the clearing of vegetation, new lights, upgraded pathway, landscaping, etc. As seen in the attached photo, undesirable vegetation has been cleared, new lights installed and pathway upgrade work is under way. There are around 400 Abbotsleigh students from both the Junior and Senior schools who use the pathway twice daily. The students carry heavy backpacks and sometimes musical instruments; some students have a mobility problem. Students are also encouraged to ride scooters, bikes, etc to school as part of their physical wellbeing. The laneway upgrade will be of major benefit to the students and to local residents.
This Monday is ANZAC Day and for our meeting this Wednesday, Brigadier Neil Turner will be our guest speaker. All members are invited to wear their medals.

SILENT AUCTIONS & RAFFLE
This year we plan to have approximately 80 items for the Silent Auction (20 from each beneficiary). In addition, we will select 5 items for the Raffle and we understand the Committee will have approximately 7 Live Auctions including a Scenic Tour on the Mekong River and a one week self-drive hire on a luxury narrowboat from their Warwickshire base. They have a fleet of 27 boats, ranging from 3 to 5 star, sleeping from 2 to 8 people.
We are meeting with the beneficiaries every week for a short meeting to provide them with a place to ask questions and to ensure we don’t duplicate the Silent Auction items. This has proved to be a really excellent way to guarantee we maintain good communications and learn from one another.
The Silent Auctions will be laid out in the foyer area at the bottom of the stairs with the Wine Tombola at the Western end. The Wine Tombola will have bottles valued at between $20 and $30 with a number of higher value bottles sprinkled amongst them.

As Rotarians, we contribute our skills, expertise and financial support to promote peace, fight disease, provide clean water, save mothers and children, support education, grow local economies and protect the environment, at home and internationally.
Rotary’s Global Grants programme supports these efforts in communities worldwide.
Over the years Wahroonga Rotary has been involved in a number of Global Grants and each of them began with a cell of interested Rotarians within Wahroonga Club saying to one another, “Gee, wouldn’t it be a great idea to join up with Rotarians in ‘this geographical area of need’ “and “do the ‘identified good’ ” there?”
. . . and that’s how a Global Grant begins!!!
The rest is simple. Whether the project idea is potentially as basic in value as US$30,000; or as big as US$400,000, with Rotarians working together across international borders.
As with any worthwhile pursuit there is always work to be done and on this occasion, it will be done by the Global Grant Committee, comprised of Rotarians from each of the countries involved. The work commences by reducing the concept to writing. A Global Grant template and other Rotary Foundation tools, created for the purpose, make the filing, review and approval processes straightforward.
In recent years, of fifty-nine completed grants sponsored by District 9685 clubs, forty percent ($1,500,000) of a total Global Grant value of $3,750,000 has been contributed, through the matching process, by the Rotary Foundation World Fund in support of those Grant projects.
Matching by The Rotary Foundation with funds from the World Fund is a strong incentive for clubs to think beyond the club to do major good in the world at home and abroad.
For example, our District 9685 will contribute $8,000 towards an approved Global Grant and that sum together with supporting funds from Districts from across the nation, and the world, will be matched 80% by the Rotary Foundation.
So with efforts to seek out partners we can turn a modest Club contribution into something worthwhile.
An example to consider
Local Club contribution
$6,000
District Contribution
$8,000
Overseas Clubs (2) contribution
$10,000
Sub Total
$24,000
Rotary Foundation 80%
$19,200
Total Funds to be distributed
to "Do Good in the World"
$43,200
