It’s always a joyful occasion to induct a new member into the wonderful world of Rotary. This past Wednesday we welcomed Susie Stathakis into the Rotary Club of Wahroonga, and the ceremony took place on the doorstop of her place of work! Susie is part of the team at MCY Real Estate whose office is in Railway Ave Wahroonga. Susie joined in with us as we unveiled the Rotary Walk sign near the Rotary Community Noticeboard in Railway Ave.
The story behind Rotary Walk is quite interesting. What started out as a stroll along a narrow, uneven and unkept path with our local member Alister Henskens SC MP two years ago, turned into a lengthy journey along a road with many twists and bends. Government Departments, Ministers, bureaucracy, heritage, legal, local government, etc. We got there and now it’s time to move onto the next stage. This will include planting of native flora, Indigenous bush tucker medicinal and edible plants, and artwork.

As we unveiled the Rotary Walk sign last week, it was very pleasing to see the amount of pedestrian traffic using the upgraded path, one of many girls and train travellers' using the pathway shown here.

Ed Comment:
Several years ago we approached Amanda Choy (KMC) to ask her to nominate a suitable organisation to include in our Rotary Community Award process(Environment Category) - that was successful and Janelle Speight maintained contact in subsequent years and sought an accreditation for our Rotary Club, which has now been updated for 2022/23. Thank you Simran for maintaining this tradition. We will continue to seek to maintain these standards through the events we undertake and sponsor.
Recently, the Chair of KYDS, Helen Jarvis, and the CEO, Anthony Rigney, invited Wahroonga Rotary to attend a "Thank You lunch" at EY Consultants at EY Consultants City office on Friday 28 April.
As our representative to KYDS, Nermine Toma attended and she heard a testimony from Josh, a student who had attended KYDS and the KYDS CEO Anthony. Over the past 12 years, Wahroonga Youth Committee has provided almost $30,000 in donations to KYDS and we are very supportive of their work.
We have attached the two speeches (below) in full as a download as we believe you may find them useful for a young person in your life at a time when you or their parents are at their wits end as to what to do.
Parents in particular, are interested in individual young people’s impression of how they were helped by KYDS.
Josh spoke on their behalf at the Lunch. He has come through the process succesfully and is now 21 and working at Masada College and going to University at Macquarie.
In 2003, Lindfield Rotary raised the funds and partnered with Ku-ring-gai Council to establish KYDS – a free, local, and confidential counselling service for children and young people. On 31 March 2005 KYDS opened its doors with one counsellor, who operated at the library in Lindfield. KYDS supported 36 young people in its first year.
Today, a team of 18 passionate and qualified mental health professionals support young people to work through their challenges and to help them to achieve their potential. Over the past year, we provided 5462 counselling sessions to more than 400 young people.
