                           President's Message
We had a most enjoyable meeting last week and I am always amazed at the knowledge and politeness of the students that attend our meetings. This week from Knox Grammar School, David Wang, Simran Fardin and Swairatwa Roy joined us. The debate on the Four-Way Test and COVID-19 vaccinations raised a very interesting discussion. It was a pleasure to have teacher Mr Ben Jackson back visiting our Club as the Moderator (son of former member Richard Jackson) and DGN Mina Howard from District 9685 join us online.  Thank you to Ken Broadhead, Helen Clarke and Sue Owen for running the debate meeting and also thanks to the tech team for this week - Neil and Sabarish.

Outstanding effort by Margaret Cameron, hand knitting beautiful beanies for sale to raise funds for our Club. On behalf of RCW members thank you - real “Service above Self” our  Rotary motto.

We didn’t get to have our St. Lucy’s Breakfast meeting due to COVID restrictions in August 2020. In August 2021 a breakfast will go ahead, all going well in the community (with COVID restrictions.) I’ll get a chance to see our friends at St. Lucy’s School on Tuesday 18 May for the opening of the Dominic Centre, which is very exciting.

The Rotary Club of Berowra Mother’s Day Plant Sale was on last week and it was good to catch up with those lovely Rotarians just up the road. 10 potted plants travelled back home to my garden!  We look forward to visiting their next Plant Sale for Father’s Day in Spring.

You’ll all get a chance to catch up with the other Rotary Club members that are involved with the Bobbo, as well as sponsors and beneficiaries at our Club meeting on the evening of Wednesday 16 June. This will be at Hornsby BMW in Waitara.  Hornsby BMW are a sponsor of the Bobbo and have kindly offered their premises for the BOBBO Cocktail evening. There will be food, drinks, seating, presentations and a chance to mingle! It will be fun!

Please take care of yourselves and each other. Reach out to our Welfare Officer Steve McGregor anytime or feel free to contact me as well. Remember Coffee Club at Off the Rails in Wahroonga each Wednesday morning after our breakfast meetings.

Have a good week.

Reflections on our Hybrid meeting #22
Last weeks meeting was devoted to the Four-Way Test "debate" with three Knox senior students joining us to provide their thoughts on the topic.

'Can the Rotary  Four-Way test be applied to determine priorities for receipt of COVID-19 vaccinations?’

The team was accompanied by a moderator  - Ben Jackson. (past member Richard Jackson's son) a Knox teacher who provided observations on the boys presentations after their delivery.

The young team

               Speaker #1
             David Wang
Speaker #2
Swairatwa Roy
            Speaker #3
        Simran Fardin.
Moderator Mr Ben Jackson
Is it the Truth?
Is it fair to all concerned?
Will it build goodwill and better friendships?
Will it be beneficial to all?

The boys' delivery was very thoughtful with commentary about the the Four-Way Test being mixed. It was noted that the underlying sentiment had aspects that were applicable but the subject matter of the topic was of such complexity that the pragmatic approach required to ensure there was a balanced vaccine delivery programme, to protect the most vulnerable, was not fully supported by the contention of "fairness or benefit" applied to all at a particular point in time - so a time element needed to be considered.

The boys took up centre stage together and members, who thoroughly enjoyed the creativity of the presentations, had many questions for the team including a snapshot of their career aspirations. An interesting snippet of information that came from the team was that details related to the Rotarian who came up with the Four-Way Test wording can be found - here.

Thanks PP Ken and PP Sue and Helen for the opportunity to listen to such a high standard of delivery and the abilities of young adults to tackle such current/challenging issues.

Our Hybrid Meeting #23
At this week's meeting our Community team leader Jo Karaolis will conduct a Community Caring Award presentation to the Sikh Temple and several of their representatives are coming to - click to enlarge breakfast where they will receive the award.
The breakfast is their award, in addition to the plaque, as they declined a donation, believing that others need the money more than they do. What they do need from us is a warm welcome and feeling that they are a valued part of the community, which is our Diversity Goal. Information about Sikhs in Australia can be accessed at this website: https://www.sikh.com.au/cgi-bin/index.cgi?page=27
We are honouring their efforts in providing meals to volunteer firefighters in the bushfires of 2019-20 as well as the work of the Sikh Community based in Parramatta that supported international students during the COVID-19 period when they were stranded in Sydney without aid after the lockdown.

From our UK Correspondents #12
So, this last week was election week. For our lowly Parish Council, through our County Councillors for Buckinghamshire, to several metropolitan mayors in England and then the devolved assemblies in Scotland and Wales. The summary would be that the incumbent governments all did well – Labour in Wales, the nationalists in Scotland and “Boris” in England. This may be a mixture of vaccination approval and understanding of the difficult decisions made by governments over the COVID months. You all will see the impact of the SNP and Conservative positioning for or against a second independence referendum over the next, perhaps, three years.
