Commander Barry Vincent and Fiona Zhou, Multicultural Liaison officer at Local Area Command (LAC) we appreciate your generosity, taking time out of your busy schedule to come and speak to our Club on 26th May. We live in a broad and diverse community in the Ku-ring-gai and Hornsby area and it is good to know we are in safe hands with our local LAC. Thank you for your time and knowledge.

More good news in the local community and for the State of NSW! Congratulations to the newly appointed Minister for Families, Communities and Disability Services, The Hon. News
Indian COVID-19 Relief Appeal
All of us in our Club have been horrified by images of families in India carrying their sick loved ones on stretchers from hospital to hospital seeking help and hearing of people dying, not from the virus itself, but from lack of oxygen. We hear how people with symptoms have no way of getting tested, let alone treated, because the health system is overwhelmed.
As Sabarish explained recently at our meeting, this is what happens when those with power take their eye off the virus or underestimate the risk: people die. And we watch on, helpless.

But as Rotarians we have the ability to help.

Our fellow Rotarians at the Rotary Club of Mysore, India have put themselves in the front line, providing oxygen cylinders, protective equipment, home COVID packs including COVID tests and other medical equipment to those who call their Rotary volunteer helpline. But they urgently need our financial help so they can buy supplies. Our Club wants to send that help urgently.
Below a snapshot of the type of supplies we plan to fund and approximate values.

Our Hybrid meeting #25

This week we hear from a young traveller Michelle Lorschy who has spent time at the St Judes facility in Tanzania.- an update on the progress of the School of St Jude established by Gemma Sisia (an Australian girl in 2002)

We will also hear from PP Richard Pitt on the Sri Lankan orphanage and Jo Karaolis will present more Community Caring Awards for the Dish and Fusion.

A background to the Sri Lankan Orphanage is provided by Richard for your interest.

"The orphanage was built as a result of the 26th December 2004 Tsunami. Fundraising took the better part of 2005-2006. Building took place in 2007 - 2008. 80 girls moved in early in 2009.The official opening took place on 16th April 2009"

Reflections on our Hybrid meeting #24
Last week our speaker was Commander Barry Vincent of Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Local Area Command who, as he told us, is responsible for the police stations at Gordon and Hornsby and the Community and Road Education Centre (C.A.R.E.S.) facility on Mona Vale Road, St Ives. This makes him directly responsible for 171 personnel. Their well-being and mental health care was a specific concern for a number of questioners from our Club this morning.

Ku-ring-gai Special Olympics Fun Run
The Youth Committee was asked by Helen Clarke to provide the BBQ for the annual Special Olympics Fun Run at East Wahroonga on Sunday.

Wahroonga Rotary was well represented by Dave Rigby, Greg Starr, Nermine Toma, Ann Davidson, Anshu Saxena, Helen Clarke, Rob Hamilton, Ian Cameron, Ian Faulks and Bob Howe. Ross Catterall rang the night before to add his services which was very much appreciated.

We sold some 400 Sausage sandwiches with additions of Onions, Bacon and Eggs.  A really excellent mornings work. The Event was managed very successfully by Mildren Events.
Knox Boys were very well represented with 119 Boarders and over 200 Day Boys there to assist and support the runners (and of course Helen Clarke herself).

From our UK Correspondants #14
My brother emailed from Canada last week with ‘Really Important Things’ as the subject line.  He wanted to know what my plans were for the Eurovision Song Contest.  I replied that as usual plans involved a bottle of wine and a Eurovision Bingo card featuring wind machine, pyrotechnics, shedding clothing, mid-song key change etc. and when was Canada going to enter?

Wine Tasting Fundraiser

 ‘BRING OUT YOUR DEAD’ WINE-TASTING

We are now very close to this June 9 fundraising event, funds raised will be donated to the Hornsby/Ku-ring-gai Women’s Shelter.

Pleased to report we have only 1 spot left- so 31 of our members, partners and friends will be joining rotarians from Lane Cove, Hunters Hill and residents from the BayTree Retirement  Village at Greenwich. This means that so far we have raised approximately $5000, with more expected.
In the next couple of days those who are coming will receive two notes, one from the BayTree advising the check-in details for Covid safe requirements and one from the organizing team outlining the ‘rules’ for the tasting.

The big message will be to bring your oldest red and white bottles and be prepared to enjoy yourselves!  If anyone would like to fill the one last spot, please let me know!
