As previously mentioned, I always enjoy hearing member vocational talks and member topic talks of interest. This past Wednesday we had the pleasure of hearing from Nermine Toma and her son Mark Toma; the two talks complimented each other. Nermine spoke about her profession as a pharmacist and the reason for migrating to Australia; Mark spoke about the benefits of living in Australia, which he referred to as the lucky country. Click - here - for a copy of Mark's presentation.
At the recent District Assembly I picked up an interesting flyer Rotarians for Bees; a copy of the flyer is attached. Note in the heading on the flyer, “To Be a Keeper of Bees…You Don’t Need to be a Beekeeper”. With our interest in the environment, and recent talk on sustainability, this might be of interest to members. There’s also a suggestion to join ESRAG (Environmental Sustainability Rotarian Action Group).
On Wednesday afternoon demolition work started on an existing dwelling (photo) on my land adjacent to the house to make way for a new two-bedroom granny flat. This has been in the planning for over 12 months. My daughter and her family moved out of the dwelling a couple of months ago pending demolition which was delayed due to the excessive rainfall. This will be a 5-6 month build then Gabrielle and I will move into the granny flat; my daughter and her family will move into the house after some remodeling/improvements.
This has been an interesting week for Rotary visits. On Monday I gave a didgeridoo talk to the Rotary Club of Penrith. This is a small dinner club with around 12 members present. On Tuesday I attended the Rotary Club of Sydney via Zoom. This is a large lunchtime club and during the meeting they inducted the new Police Commissioner Karen Webb APM and PCYC CEO Dominic Teakle. Both were inducted as Honorary Members. Due to the historical connection between RC Sydney and the police, it is tradition for the Police Commissioner to be inducted as an Honorary Member. Even though there’s an historical connection between RC Sydney and PCYC, this is the first time the PCYC CEO has been inducted as an Honorary Member. Dominic Teakle gave a short address and Karen Webb gave a keynote address. A video recording was made of the meeting, and I’ll share the link when available.
In the meanwhile, here’s a link to a video of the Formal Appointment Ceremony of Commissioner Karen Webb APM streamed live from Boorowa on 1stFebruary 2022.
