It was a pleasure to have two of my long-standing Hornsby Lions friends visit with us last week. I have known John Lockyer and Ted Henebery for many years, more so with John as we go back 15-20 years. We were both members of the Hornsby Chamber of Commerce and active in the community. We also spent time on community radio as the Hornsby Chamber of Commerce had a weekly radio show. John was the CEO of Garrigal Housing (affordable housing) and had a connection with some of the homeless people living in the Hornsby, Berowra and Brooklyn bushlands. John, together with Ps David Nathan, established the original Hornsby Connect and was also involved in the restart of Hornsby Connect.
As John mentioned, he recently made a trip to Poland where he and other members of international Lions clubs provided support for Ukrainian refugees. By an absolute coincidence, John bumped into a mutual friend in the dining room of the Warsaw Hotel where they were both staying. Bob Mendelsohn is an American who has lived in Australia for many years; he heads up the Australian arm of Jews for Jesus and has a book shop in the Eastern suburbs. I first met Bob around 30 years ago through church connections, and again 4 years ago at a pickleball game at North Ryde. Bob and I (together with Jenetta) introduced pickleball to the PCYC in September 2018 as a demonstration sport. This was the 1st anniversary of the new club. I was able to introduce John Lockyer to Bob Mendelsohn at the PCYC.
Life has many surprises. Attached is a photo of John (on the R) and Bob (on the L) (with another Lion) taken in Warsaw. When I received the photo it had a caption, Two Lions and a Lion of Judah.

Members assisting in prior years
The roster for this work is attached - here - your participation for part or all of the roster periods identified, or as much time as you can spare, is welcomed.
This is a great Community project and a lot of fun. Please join your colleagues to assist.
Further to my note last week - just a reminder that the submission for Vocational awards have now been rescheduled to close at the end of July and we are hoping to have the event in the middle of August.
We will be circulating this information directly to members attaching the updated flyer in the next week!.
The postponement gives us an opportunity to review other possible nominees so that we can involve as many people as possible in the awards. Please consider worthy candidates!
The link above takes you to the interview aired today on Triple H with Mary Crammond, pioneer of Shelterbags in Australia. A great initiative needed by the homeless, now more than ever during this chilly winter weather.
Shelterbags, sourced from S Africa, paid for and distributed by Rotary provide a warm, dry and portable shelter for Australia's homeless. Mary Crammond, Shelterbags pioneer explains the need, the logistics and the impact of this valuable resource, particularly relevant during these colder months.
