                           President's Message
A lot can happen in a week, and it has! Our big Change Over celebration is postponed and we are back in lockdown where we started our year together. Last Wednesday’s meeting with many guests from BlowFly cricket and six of our members telling ‘sporty’ stories was a most enjoyable meeting. Now, the new Rotary year is about to begin and that is very exciting.

As your serving President for 2020-2021 I am very proud of our Club’s achievements and your amazing efforts. I am pleasantly surprised at the lengths Rotarians will go to helping others. You are all an amazing group of talented and skilled individuals. It was a challenging year and Peter Kirkwood may have some similar challenges. We will continue to support and help him throughout the year.

Thank you especially to the Board, John, Greg, Doug, and Peter for your work and help over the year, and also to the Club Committee Chairs. It was an outstanding year with fundraising and new ideas emerging. Those people who will be receiving awards for 2020-2021 year will receive them at the postponed celebration dinner. If this doesn’t go ahead, we will announce them in the Wahroongler and I will get those awards to you. There are many stand out people in the Club and I thank you.

How exciting is it that our Club won 3 District 9865 awards! Ian Cameron, our Editor, has included the details I sent out in an email to you all. I’m very proud of the 3 awards we received which are: Individual award - Jo Karaolis, International Large Club award - Anne Prescott & team and the award for Best Large Club - Wahroonga and Beecroft. Congratulations to all awardees in District. Thanks to DG David Clark for his positive encouragement throughout the year leading all the clubs in District, and his team for all their assistance.

This is my last newsletter as President and my sign off date is 30th June. From 1st July I am very pleased to hand over and welcome our new President Peter Kirkwood OAM for 2021-2022 Rotary year. Peter has great connections to our local community, is well-established as a Rotarian locally and in District. On behalf of the Rotary Club of Wahroonga, Peter, we all wish you the very best in your leadership role as President. With your experience at District level and your calm nature we are in good hands.

All the very best to you and your wife Gabrielle for the year ahead.

Best wishes, keep well and thank you everyone.

It has been wonderful to serve as your President.

Reflections on our Meeting #26
Our meeting last week (as we know now was our last for the 2020/2021 Rotary Year) was entertaining and instructive.

The continuum of the AGM 2019 was held and all motions approved.

We had a visit of a contingent of BlowFly Cricket leaders and players who were to receive a Community Caring award for their wonderful work with 'All Ability’ programs.. Their exploits were ably described by Mark Rushton and several members of group spoke of their enjoyment and success at the sport. President Janelle and PE Peter conducted the presentation.
Anne, Mike Langford, Pres Janelle, Mark Rushton, Maddie Jones, Aditya Swarup, Akanksha Swarup, Isolde Kamerman

Following which we were entertained by our selected members who described their achievements in their chosen sport interviewed by Phill Comfort.

We learned that:

Jim Fulton was a champion Tennis and Squash player and a left handed golfer.

Barbara Salisch was passionate about her horses as a youngster and enjoyed the time she groomed and rode Sally on her Gloucester property.

Greg Starr described sailing as like - "Standing in a cold shower ripping up $50 notes" - but mostly a serene experience!

Mentie Knowles was not a natural sport but enjoyed the challengers her three brothers threw at her before adopting water skiing as a go to sport.

Peter Kirkwood described his martial arts learning and expertise achieved - becoming a Black Belt in 1972.

Jo-Ann Moffat is a soccer fanatic playing for several teams  - and was proud of her achievements in perfecting the "nutmeg" move on her opponents!

Jo Ann was adjudged the "best attire".

From our UK Correspondants #17
It must be very difficult for you all, despite what you see & read, to appreciate what a year this has been for us in the UK and we are the lucky ones as we are still here, living in houses with gardens in a lovely area with comparative financial security.

I still find it difficult to believe that for 66 weeks our lives have revolved around COVID & that its effects are still far from over.  I, for one, despite my love of travel, have not spent a day away during that time nor travelled more than 70 miles, something I would never have believed possible whilst being healthy but there again, I have had my healthiest year ever - not even a cold!

School of St Jude - update
Rob Ferguson shares with us:

The Beyond St Jude’s Program (BSJ) is one of my proudest achievements, and transformational stories like that of St Jude’s alumni Judica, are the reason for that.

BSJ has two parts; first a Community Service Program during which our participating graduates volunteer their time as teachers in government schools or in non-academic roles at St Jude’s. The second part is a College or Tertiary Program, where scholars are supported to complete their first higher education qualification.

Book Fair Cancelled

Lifeline’s annual Giant Book Fair scheduled for 1-4 July at Knox Grammar School has regrettably been cancelled due to COVID. A big blow for Lifeline, Australia’s largest provider of suicide prevention services. New dates and alternative venues are being investigated. Lifeline thanks Rotary volunteers who were scheduled to assist at Knox.

This week we meet Janine Rogers from Catch the Clouds. There are 60,000 sick children who miss out on school each year. These are children with serious medical conditions who must remain at home or in hospital. Volunteer teachers are provided for these children to ensure they remain up to date and able to continue their education when their health has improved. www.catchtheclouds.org
