The Bobbo Cocktail event last Wednesday evening at Hornsby BMW was a great and what a fabulous venue. Ku-ring-gai, Turramurra, St. Ives and Wahroonga Rotary Clubs all came together to hand over cheques to nine beneficiaries. This time there was also a donation made to Terrey Hills SES. Ken Broadhead was pleased about that! This year the Bobbo was a record-breaking fundraising year with $250,000 being raised by riders, volunteers and sponsors.
It was my great pleasure to be able to hand over $25,000 to KYDS CEO Anthony Rigney, $20,000 to Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Women’s Shelter President Louise McCann, $5,000 to Hornsby Connect, Jo Grant (long term volunteer) and last, but just as importantly, $125,000 to Lifeline H2H CEO Wendy Carver OAM.
As you know our Club was the host this year and we thought we would try something different by hosting a cocktail event rather than formal sit-down dinner. The feedback has been very positive for this format and Hornsby BMW, who were also a Silver sponsor, were very accommodating to work with. A huge thank you to Mikki Weinand (BMW Marketing Manager) for all his help in the lead up and also on the night. It was a very long day for him.
All the beneficiaries connected to the Bobbo through the Rotary clubs are very deserving and we know that they work hard all year round in the community. Also, all the sponsors are very generous not only donating but also volunteering. Paul Rickard (RC of Turramurra) did a great job over the year chairing the Committee as well as being MC on the evening. All the riders do a huge amount of fundraising whilst having a great time riding and keeping fit. The King of the Mountain rider raised $10,000!!! Next year’s Bobbo ride is 27th March, 2022 – Save the Date!
Many people from Lifeline H2H attended and it was great to meet Wendy again and her daughter Emma Bagley who is Lifeline’s fundraising Manager. The Hon. Alister Henskens SC MP, Minister for Families, Communities and Disabilities, Member for Ku-ring-gai and Honorary Rotarian spoke about the ride and the community support which is wonderful. Presidents Tim Shea, Lyndall Pearson (RC of St Ives) and Arthur Maltby (RC of Turramurra) it was great to have you all attend on the night along with Adventist Healthcare, San Hospital's CEO Brett Goods and our DGE Lindsay May OAM (RC of Lane Cove) and his wife Tania May.
Extra big thanks to Rochelle Wiley who did a wonderful job organising the food, tables, chairs, drinks etc., also with help from Richard Pitt (wine, beer and ice), Peter Smith (collection of food), Phillip and Shirley Comfort, Neil McWhannell (MC), Anshu Saxena and Janet Grundy (check in desk), Jonathan Wiley, (serving drinks, set up and much more), Peter Watson (photos and set up) and all those at the end who helped clean up - too many to mention! Fantastic, thank you!
This coming week is Refugee Week from 20th June -26th June and the theme is ‘UNITY’. I celebrated early at an event on Tuesday 15thJune held by Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Multicultural Network at Gordon Baptist Church. Two refugee speakers Mariam Akoba (university student) and Anas (businessman) told us their stories of hardship and being forced to flee, but now their lives have turned around for the better in Australia. PE Peter Kirkwood OAM gave a demonstration on the didgerido, which was very much appreciated by all the guests.
The meeting, on the 23rd June will be lots of fun and include the Community Caring Award for Blowfly Cricket. It looks like we might have around 6-8 guests! This will be my last meeting at the Warrawee Club as President. Then we are off to Asquith Golf Club for Changeover (Wednesday 30th June) and the excitement is building. We have over 80 people attending so I’m very much looking forward to celebrating a great year with you all and welcoming in Peter Kirkwood OAM as your new President.
Keep warm and stay safe
