The month of July has come to a close and Saturday not only marks the 1st of August but the beginning of Membership month in Rotary. On 12th August we will be visited by our 9685 District Governor David Clark who will join our meeting via zoom.
DG David will join us for a series of questions many of you have put forward including some of David’s own questions people often ask about Rotary. Our membership committee is more than happy to answer any questions you have about membership or potential new members. The team is lead by Jenetta Russell OAM.
On Thursday 30th July, the Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Rotaract Club held their changeover meeting via Zoom. DG David Clark, PDG Kalma McLellan, Assist.Gov. Tom Borg, District Youth Amanda Firkins, District Community Peter Kirkwood, Ian Cameron, Ross Catterall and myself all joined in the celebrations. One of the highlights of the meeting was the induction of two new members, Steph and Jacqui. Congratulations to President Charlotte and all the new board members and also to Past President Tiana and past board members for your service to the community.
HK Rotaract have achieved some great results and these details can be found in the presentation link attached here in the newsletter. Our Club looks forward to working on some projects together with HKR.
Rotary’s community reaches far and wide. What we read about in our newsletters is not the whole story. Everyday family members, businesses, councils, other Rotary Clubs - district and globally - are exchanging ideas or finding new ways to help each other and the community. Never, under estimate the power of the good in the world especially through
Janelle
From the Editor: The Rotary Matters story (below) includes a special speaker this week - catch up with our multi media President
Our meeting last week was well attended - 52 attendees in all - visitors from the UK, other Rotary Clubs, District representatives and prospective members - and even a login from the travelling Wileys (from their warm and cosy caravan near Lake Windeyer NSW)
Anne had several announcements covering member well-being, "Save the Date" for the planned Online Trivia Night (26th September 2020), the Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Rotaract Changeover, and as part of her "on this day" segment, a special piece about the famous - Jim Darcy - and his influence over the establishment of the Royal Flying Doctor Service.
Our guest speaker the Managing Director of Withams & Company - Mr Lance Witham - treated us to a very informative presentation.
Lance's presentation covered much about the history of the Company and the coffee process from the field to the consumer and the do's and don'ts in preparing our favourite coffee(s).
A walk around the production facility was conducted, explaining the factory process in great detail.
Lance also shared much of the current and past trends in coffee production and consumption, and the effect of the pandemic on his industry; highlighting the need for businesses to be diversified and nimble to respond to fast changing circumstances.
There were a number of questions covering many aspects of the art of coffee storage and finished production.
We noted:
* Coffee is best freshly ground - while being stored for up to 49 days !
* Coffee (and tea) best drunk/brewed without water too hot!
* Consumers drinking better coffee not more!
* Best coffee comes from the higher growth regions of South America - Australian Coffee is of a lesser quality.
All in all an absorbing presentation enjoyed by the members and visitors.
This week we welcome our Guest Speaker Ms Madeline Yan.
Ms Yan is a Project officer for the Commonwealth Department of Health funded program – Sector Support & Development and Multicultural Access Project. Her role is to support entry level aged care service providers in building capacity to provide quality aged care service to both the mainstream and the diverse community.
Ms Yan will provide an overview of the aged care systems and the Commonwealth Home Support Program (CHSP).
A well planned Changeover meeting was held on Thursday evening last.
Inaugural President Joshua McKenna returned to rural NSW during the year and Tiana Jarmyn took over the role and led her team extremely well in the latter part of the year while members were active both socially and supporting their Community service activities.
Visiting Rotarians included President Janelle Speight, Peter Kirkwood, (District Community Chair) Ian Cameron and Ross Catterall were joined by DG Dave Clark, PDG Kalma McLellan, Amanda Firkins (District Youth Chair) and Tom Borg (AG Upper North Shore).
Congratulations on your inaugural year and Happy Birthday
Our Local member (and Hon Club Member) Alister Henskens recently shared with the local community our Socktastic project.
A Mental Health Project with a Difference!
The 10th October is World Mental Health Day and the RotaryClub of Wahroonga and its member Lucy Dahill, Ku-ring-gai Woman of the Year are, calling for our community to get creative and make socktastic sock puppets to show support for our essential workers 👮🏼♀️👨🏼⚕️👨🏽🏫🧑🏽🚒.
Whether it be a doctor, nurse, teacher, cleaner, carer and the list goes on, I encourage everyone to get on board and say thank you!
Due to ongoing uncertainty about holding social events indoors, we have decided to postpone our Hot August Night to another time. Instead, we will hold a spring-time event at
Ku-ring-gai Wildflower Gardens at nearby St Ives.
Watch this space! ( still watching?)
