                           President's Message
Big thanks to Helen Jarvis for coming to speak with us on KYDS and update us on Collaborative Hub. Helen has comprehensive background and boundless energy driving positive outcomes for young people of the North Shore. Mental health is a very important topic, and much is misunderstood. We aim to help those organisations like KYDS, Streetwork, The BeCentre in our Rotary service and others. For a list of more services for Youth and/or to make a donation please visit:  https://helpustohelpthem.com/

This week we are looking forward to our Four-Way Test debate. The topic to be argued is as follows: ‘Can the Rotary Four-Way Test be applied to determine priorities for receipt of COVID-19 vaccinations?’ Ken Broadhead and Helen Clarke have kindly organised this.

The Four-Way Test specifies the Ethics of Rotary International as follows:

Is it the Truth?
Is it fair to all concerned?
Will it build goodwill and better friendships?
Will it be beneficial to all?

Celebrations continue for the 100 Years of Rotary in Australia for the months of April and May. The Rotary Club of Melbourne chartered on 21st April and on 1st May the Rotary Club of Sydney Australia chartered. Through many challenging moments over the last 100 years Rotary continues to give service to the community.

Reflections on our Hybrid Meeting #21
Last weeks guest speaker was Helen Jarvis from KYDS, the Youth Development Service started in 2003 that now has centres strategically placed near to schools in Sydney’s North including the northern beaches in order to provide counselling for young people and mental health training programmes for parents and in schools.
Helen, as she confessed, loves data and that’s a good thing in a field which depends on quantitative data to measure the effectiveness of its programmes in improving mental health. We learned that the biggest concern of young people in Australia has changed from alcohol and drugs (now near the bottom of the list) to stress and anxiety, closely followed by body image. Also that KYDS counselling service is very cost effective compared to other organisations working in the same area based on international data. This is because KYDS is able to use volunteers very effectively to reduce their costs.

2020 was, as we know, a devastating year in the area of mental health with local providers unable to meet the demand for help from both adults and young people. In one of the good outcomes of COVID-19, Helen initiated a collaborative process between all other providers of mental health support to young people in Sydney’s North, in order to pick up those sitting on waiting lists or being turned away, to care for them while they waited for a counsellor to become available. This care included triaging, referral for practical needs like accommodation, and interim support for parents so they could give effective care to their child in the interim. COVID-19 also led to KYDS establishing a telehealth service.

Bob Howe in thanking Helen emphasised her success in achieving this cooperation between the different mental health services, acknowledging both the wisdom of this and the challenges in bringing it about.

Announcements for the day included Christine promoting Margaret Cameron’s irresistibly charming beanies for children and adults and a presentation of flowers by Phil Comfort to Jo-Ann Moffat for the brilliant effort she and her family firm SOS Removals made in creating the Sisters of Freedom event. Our Club is fortunate in having such a reliable and welcoming Company that plays such a proactive role in supporting our Club projects.

Our Hybrid meeting #22
At our meeting this week under the guidance of PP Ken Broadhead and Helen Clarke we will conduct a Four-Way Test debate between three representatives of Knox Grammar School. The debaters names are David Wang, Swairatwa Roy and Simran Fardin.

The topic to be argued is as follows:
‘Can the Rotary  Four- Way test be applied to determine priorities for receipt of Covid-19 vaccinations?’

The event will consist of 3 x 6-minute prepared addresses.
Participants may speak for or against the assertion as they see fit.
They do not need to but may refer to what other speakers have said, but clearly this will not be possible for the first speaker.

The adjudicator and Judge will be Mr Ben Jackson, Teacher Knox Grammar School and at the end of the debate Ben will offer observations to the audience.

Apart from the usual challenging material from the meetings' Sergeant, Richard Pitt will present update on a long standing ongoing International project

From our UK Correspondents #11
Greetings to all antipodean Rotarian friends!

Many of us here have felt that our lives have been put “on hold” over the past year by the multifarious effects of the dreaded Coronavirus. However, paradoxically, much has happened in the UK since I last wrote. Currently our Prime Minister appears to be on the back foot once again, but I shall play safe and steer clear of politics!
I am assuming (always dangerous!) that there may be members with republican views in your club, but that not withstanding, I would suggest that infinitely more worthy of our admiration is Elizabeth, our Queen. What an impressive and dignified figure she cut as she stood courageously alone at the funeral of the Duke of Edinburgh. How magnificently she has for decades fulfilled the words she spoke on her 21st birthday: “I declare before you all that my whole life, whether it be long or short, shall be devoted to your service” and what a stark contrast to grandson Harry, who appears to have opted out of his obligations, whilst seeking to enjoy the his many unique privileges.

We sympathise with his having “mental health issues”, but, to be brutally honest, who hasn’t??
