                                     President's Message
Thank you to Peter Kirkwood for arranging our guest speaker for last week, Geoff Brennan, from Ryde Rotary Club on the topic of Australian Rotary Health - more on that meeting in Jo’s section.

Another special thank you goes to our partners in our Club and the support they give members. Many partners get involved with activities in the Club and recently we have had wonderful help from Joan Giacometti, Jan Cameron and Margaret Broadhead with mask making. Margaret Cameron helped with the knitted auction items and, of course, last but not least a big thank you this month goes to Shirley Comfort for putting together gift packs, purchasing bags and wrapping to make up prizes for several events over the last two months. Thank you, Shirley.

Some of you might not know that our Club has a birthday coming up in November and the Club will celebrate 45 years as a Rotary club. Our Charter Night was on the 25th November 1975 held at the Police Citizens Boys Club (as it was called in the 1970s now PCYC) at Hornsby. There were originally 24 charter members and the meetings were held at lunchtime from 12.30pm. This year we will hold a meeting on 25th November around the history of our Club and why members love Rotary. All members new and long-term can answer that question! For more details: https://www.wahroongarotary.org/page/rcw-club-history

On Saturday night I attended our District 9685 Presidents’ meeting via Zoom. Chair of the meeting DG David Clark invited our Rotary International President Holger Knaack. Unfortunately, due to technical difficulties he was unable to attend live but has sent through a video, which I can now pass onto you all to view here: https://vimeo.com/435424326 (4.33mins)

Recently, our RCW Community noticeboard in Wahroonga was vandalised and the Perspex smashed. Thanks to our Club Secretary Greg Starr, who has promptly organised some new Perspex, (yet to be delivered) and cleaned up the damage. Once repaired this is your committee's chance to advertise a Rotary project, service activity or community event to go on the Rotary noticeboard.

On Monday I attended two separate community organisations’ meetings and had a chance to talk about our Club’s efforts to raise funds and service for our projects. Once you start to speak about Rotary and what we can achieve it is hard to stop! Thank you all for keeping the Club active.

Stay safe and read on for more Club news.

Reflections on our online meeting #29
Today’s meeting gave us the chance to learn from Club member Brett Goods, CEO of the San Adventist Hospital, how the hospital responded to the COVID-19 pandemic. It was a story of preparation and prevention rather than of a lived medical emergency, as it turned out. During the six months from February to June the hospital had nearly 2000 cases of suspected COVID-19 infection and just over 100 positive cases, of whom 6 were treated in ICU.

Brett shared some of the patient statistics during this challenging time, highlighting the inherent time constraints arising as a result of the additional infection control measures. Brett's presentation for review - here.

Brett estimates that the hospital spent an additional $2m in the 6 months to June, mostly on screening and cleaning staff and supplies, as unit pricing increased dramatically. A new role was established during the period "spotter" a designated person to watch and ensure staff handled their PPE clothing and equipment properly.

Brett’s talk gave us confidence not just that the San lived up to its very high reputation during the COVID-19 emergency this year but also that it now has a model practice on which to draw in the event of a future pandemic.

----------------------------------------
In addition Club Member and the San Foundation Managing Director - Karen Gair - joined the meeting and explained the role of the Foundation during this challenging time.
Karen spoke of how the Foundation had turned to its donor base to ask for help with purchase of PPEs and assistance with isolating COVID-19-risk staff members on site. She also reported that the Foundation had funded purchase of a new disinfecting robot called THOR, a first for an Australian hospital. THOR circles the surgical theatre identifying potentially infectious surfaces and disinfecting them with ultra-violet light rays shown in USA studies to destroy the COVID-19 virus. It has been especially welcomed by the orthopaedic surgeons operating at the San because of the risk of bone infection in hip and knee replacement surgery. She expressed gratitude to the Club for its long term support of the San and commented on how morale-lifting had been the Club’s donation of toiletry packs to staff members at the height of the COVID-19 crisis.

Ken Broadhead - the "Iron Lung"
This is the iron lung at the RI Convention in Sydney in June 2014. The man in the red shirt is D’Arcy Geale who was the main force behind the restoration. You can see that it sits on spindly legs which require that the body of the iron lung is secured in the vehicle that carries it. I think the modern version is called a ‘Ventilator’ which of course is being referred to in relation to COVID-19 patients.
The bellows provided the air but if (when) the power failed it had to kept going manually by the lever on top of the bellows.
