Those who attended the Wine, Women and Song gala event at the Hornsby RSL last Saturday night would have to agree it was a huge success. The main auditorium was at capacity with 30 tables and around 250 attendees from across the broader community spectrum. This was a major credit to Sallianne McClelland, event organiser/entrepreneur, and we all experienced her drive, commitment, and passion for those less fortunate. The main beneficiaries were Fusion, The Dish and Hornsby Connect. The three organisations, whilst separate entities, are closely connected in various ways.
For years our club has supported youth development and wellbeing through various programs such as RYLA, NYSF, Fit to Learn (PCYC police), etc. Last week we were honoured to have Owen Jiang talk with us about his experience with the NYSF (National Youth Science Forum).
This event is normally held in Canberra but this year it was a hybrid (Zoom/Face to Face) event. Covid has changed many aspects of our lives. Thanks to Sue Owen for conducting the interesting interview with Owen Jiang, and to Bob Howe for the overview of youth activities. A transcript of meeting discussion can be read - here.
This past week I attended two International Women’s Day events plus the Wine, Women and Song gala event.
The Wednesday IWD event was organised by the Women’s Shed Hornsby Ku-ring-gai and held at the PCYC.
The Thursday IWD event was organised by the Community team at Ku-ring-gai Council and held at the Avondale Golf Club. The keynote address was delivered by Annabelle Daniel OAM who is CEO Women’s Community Shelters and Chair of DV NSW
With the Rotary Zone 8 focus this coming Rotary year on "Say No to Domestic Violence", I let DGE Christine Owen know. Christine attended and was able to make some interesting connections. We shared a table with Janet Grundy.
This Wednesday we will have the Bobbo briefing delivered by John Collins. Bobbo is just over a week away (Sunday 26 March); there’s still time to register as a volunteer if you haven’t already registered. (see registration link in story below)
There's a great play on at Pymble Players in August and I thought it might be a nice way to spend a chilly winter's Sunday afternoon.
Bookings aren't open yet but I'd like to get an early expression of interest from you as to whether you'd like to attend (subject to amount of interest, availability of tickets, etc etc).
Your comments as to whether a weekend matinee or an evening outing would be appreciated as well.
Please let me know by text or email if you think this might be appealing (or not!) We could even retire to the Hornsby RSL for an early dinner if you like! (after the matinee option)
We are fast approaching the time in our Rotary year when we turn our attention to recognising the wonderful people in our community who do extraordinary things and those who excel in the chosen vocation.
So please let either Ian Cameron (Community) or John Collins (Vocational), know people of whom you are aware achieve great things supporting our needy community and/or have shown dedication and commitment to their chosen vocation.
Lucy Hobgood-Brown updates us on the inspirational work she is doing to improve the lives of people living in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Micro finance loans, emergency medicine education and helping pygmies harvest honey, sustainably....and more. www.handupcongo.org
