A few weeks ago, I had a chance meeting with Daniel Allars at the PCYC. During our brief chat he asked if he could visit Wahroonga Rotary and give a presentation on the Top Blokes Foundation, an organisation with which he is now connected. I’ve known Daniel for well over a decade when he started at the PCYC as a sports activity coordinator. As he showed leadership ability, he was promoted to Assistant Club Manager and then to Club Manager. Wahroonga Rotary supported Daniel’s leadership development by offering him a placement at RYLA. From memory this was around 2012.
After Daniel had taken over as the PCYC club manager, we worked closely together during the design and build of the new PCYC.
Following the sale of the old PCYC to a property developer, we had a lease back arrangement before having to relocate into the old Hornsby Bowling Club; this was during the build of the new club which had been delayed. The PCYC had taken over the bowling club which I set up as the PCYC Performing Arts Centre. Again, this had Daniel’s support as he is a musician (vocal and guitar) and regularly ran band nights at the PCYC.
So, it’s been interesting to watch Daniel’s development. Initially as a competent young person, then to take on leadership and family responsibilities, and to become an engaging and interesting presenter. One key point I noticed from Daniel’s presentation is that he engaged with his audience from the outset, and then throughout his presentation.
Thank you to Dave Rigby for an interesting overview of the Bobbo event that took place on Sunday 18 September, and thank you to all our members who assisted on the day.
This Wednesday our guest speaker is Jodie Mullen, to present the Room to Read story
21 members and family attended a most enjoyable and informative morning at Boongala Gardens at Kenthurst on Saturday. Rain threatened mightily but it stayed fine until we were packing up our deliciously shared morning tea, when we got a few drops….then a few more…. And yes, it poured!
We learnt a lot about native plants, edible and deadly while walking through this surprising rainforest set in the middle of dry Kenthurst. Malcolm has done an amazing job over more than 40 years to grow this magical place.
We enjoyed browsing and buying some native plants at their little nursery on site.
We have a pictorial record - here - for you to browse.
For Club members and families - this outstanding event will held at the Wahroonga Park in October so please save the date and your volunteering participation is welcomed.
