The Club’s 45th Anniversary was a small but festive affair at Warrawee with a much appreciated Zoom contingent. For those present in person the significance of the day was marked by party hats, chocolate bars and a huge birthday cake cut by Rob Ferguson as one of the founding fathers. For all, the highlight was Neil’s Five Star Fellowship interview of Janet Grundy who, with Judith Kaine, first broke through the gender wall as the Club welcomed women into the Club (though Rob assured us that the Rotary wives were there from the beginning helping in many ways!) Neil began his interview by revealing that, prior to becoming a bookshop queen, Janet had been a model and had trained in London with Joanna Lumley, which was excuse enough for him to deck her out in a wafty silken gown complete with scarf, large picture hat and sunglasses. Thus disguised, Janet was confident to unleash her life story including her Danish mother, her christening at Kensington Palace chapel, her ‘good girl’ days at schools in Chelsea, her secretarial excellence with Ove Arup & Partners (a large multicultural engineering firm famous for Sydney Opera House), her travelling days to Israel and down the east coast of Africa, ending up in Johannesburg and Cape Town where she embarked on her modelling career.
