After an enjoyable Christmas break, it was good to get back together again this past Wednesday for our breakfast meeting at the PCYC. I am aware there have been small group meetings taking place over the holiday period, together with the RYLA dinner.
I’m also mindful of the fact we are still in the holiday period and several of our members are away on vacation. We had 24 attend Wednesday’s breakfast meeting that included our guest speaker Superintendent Matt Scott and Hornsby Chamber of Commerce VP Omar Afiouni. Superintendent Matt Scott is Commander of the Ku-ring-gai Police Area Command which consists of 135 uniform officers and 13 civilian staff. Matt spoke of his earlier days in the NSW Police Force spending quite a few years in Central Western NSW, the role of the police digital radio network, police work and mental health, etc. It was a very informative presentation. There’s a close interaction between the Ku-ring-gai PAC and the PCYC police officers.
This Thursday 26 January is Australia Day and I’m sure many of us will enjoy a variety of social activities. I’ll be supporting three Rotary Clubs on the day and another on Wednesday evening 25 January. This is in relation to a National Australia Day Grant and didgeridoo playing.
Speaking of the didgeridoo, one of the greatest Aboriginal didge players is David Hudson who has travelled the globe promoting Indigenous culture. Here’s a link to a recording of David telling his story at a TED event in Cairns QLD. Here’s another link to a recording of Niki Nana (We’re One) at Yanni concerts in India and China.
Our breakfast meeting this Wednesday 25 January will be in the Wahroonga Park. If the weather is fine we’ll gather in the rose garden, otherwise in the Rotunda. We’re inducting Arija McQuillan into the World of Rotary.
The return of RYLA was met with enthusiasm and great energy by all concerned. The wonderful organising team including Rotaractors and past RYLArians met an enthusiastic group of 60 RYLA "newbies" last weekend at Knox Grammar School in Warrawee. Some of our Club members participated as volunteers, with Bob Howe, Greg Starr and Barbara Salisch joining our sponsored group at the dinner a last Tuesday evening.
Anshu Saxena, Judy Tanna and Sallianne McClelland volunteered at the "Mock Interviews" on Wednesday and Ian Cameron joined the volunteers for the "Mock Events" on Thursday.
As usual a great experience with our young leaders.
There are lots of local Community events on to celebrate Australia Day - check out the Council website - here -for a special event at the West Pymble Aquatic Centre.
Especially notable is the annual Ku-ring-gai Citizenship Awards at Knox Grammar click - here - read details of the event. Always a delightful occasion.
Also lots on in and around Sydney Harbour as usual click - here - to check them out.
RI President Jennifer Jones has been an inspiration to many Rotary Clubs and Rotarians across the world. When Jennifer has something to say it is always worth stopping and listening.
The recent message to Rotarians and Club leaders is one of those occasions.
