                                     President's Message
On behalf of the Club I’m very proud of the tireless efforts that come from our committee members. Thank you to the Youth Committee for your presentation which showed how much work you are all doing striving to fundraise for the Youth Projects. Let’s not forget also the tireless work that has also gone into the International Committee’s Trivia Night to raise funds for their projects as well. Thank you to all the members and friends for supporting these events in the ways that you can. Now for some breaking news on the Rotary International front.

Tunji Funsho – TIME’s 100 most influential people in the World for 2020

Dr. Tunji Funsho, chair of Rotary’s Nigeria National PolioPlus Committee.

The Rotary Club of Wahroonga would like to join Rotary   International in congratulating Dr Tunji Funsho for his   endless commitment to #ENDPOLIO. TIME100 has   recognised him for his role in the wild polio certification of   Africa, reminding us that great leaders make great   accomplishments possible.
Dr Funsho told TIME magazine of the achievement: “The   polio eradication program in Nigeria has gone through some   difficult times, but I never once doubted that this day would   come.

Any time that we’ve experienced a setback, Rotary and our partners have been able to find solutions and develop strategies for reaching vulnerable children.
He added: “One thing I know for certain, is if Nigeria could eliminate the wild poliovirus, any country can eliminate it.”
As we head into the month of October and towards World Polio day, Saturday 24th October let’s remember that we, as Rotarians around the world have done so much for the #ENDPOLIO campaign. Together with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the WHO, the CDC and UNICEF, let’s keep going and make the world Polio free.

Reflections on our online meeting #26
The 26th meeting of our Club on Zoom was a robust reminder of why we belong to Rotary. It began with the induction of Anshu Saxeena as a welcome new member. Jenetta and Mentie did the honours, reading the four-way test and presenting Anshu’s badges as well as a partner badge to her husband Palav.
Anshu will represent the vocation of Customer Relations – Banking and will join the Community Committee. In accepting her membership, Anshu affirmed her commitment to Rotary’s humanitarian and peace goals and said she would like to be the reason someone smiles and someone feels love.

Other highlights of the meeting were: a heart-tugging photo of Tanya and Max’s very new grandbaby, Leo; good news about our sick friends, Ron Wainberg who hopefully will go home this week and Anne Prescott who has moved to Mt Wilga and an invitation from guest Kay Carter to the Pennant Hills Club’s Zoom and in-person meetings to hear speakers such as the Bell family, who on October 14 will relate their recent experience of being ‘bombed’ in Lebanon.

And then there was Ken Broadhead’s smooth performance as Sergeant and his sale of 4 donated griddles for  questionable purposes to even more questionable Club members; the Giacomettis’ wedding anniversary (Rob  is still a work in progress, according to his wife Joan, it was said) and not to be overlooked, Neil’s vivid  orange shirt set off by a background of stained glass windows from Sainte-Chapelle in Paris.

The bulk of the meeting was given to the Youth Committee and was a challenge to all of us to shoulder our particular responsibilities during the Corona pandemic. We may not be at the frontline of the medical emergency but we have our own frontline, which is finding ways to keep up the support of our community, to which we have committed ourselves as a Club, when all the activities that have traditionally funded these are cancelled. The Youth Committee have come up with three fundraising schemes each of which depends for success on the wholehearted and generous involvement of all of us. Their goal is to raise at least $11,600 to make up the gap between our present Youth resources and the committed expenditure.

First up, David Rigby introduced us to the 2020 Christmas Raffle-with-a-difference. This year it is our Club’s own raffle and the money it generates will all go to our Youth projects. The first prize is a superb espresso coffee machine, grinder and coffee from Witham Coffee Roasters valued at $1750. Tickets begin at 1 for $5 and decrease in cost as numbers go up with $50 buying 15 tickets. As for the Christmas raffle each year, we are asked to get our friends and family to buy tickets, but this year it will be by having them go online to our Club Facebook page or website. Rob Giacometti says he is looking for $100 in raffle ticket sales from each of us.

Second enterprise highlighted was Christine Biddle’s Masketeers. As Bob Howe explained, Christine master-managed a very efficient sweatshop of Rotary seamstresses to produce high-quality, best practice, designer face masks to be sold for $15 each at Turramurra and Wahroonga on Saturday 3rd October. Volunteer sales people are requested. This is a brilliant bit of business enterprise by our Club members and its success depends on us. Please Volunteer at the link in the story below or contact Christine to join the roster.

The third and final fundraising initiative that Bob Howe unveiled was their Silent Auction and he brought Mariela Salisch online from her workplace to reveal the details. She and Christine Biddle have so far gathered 20 prizes and are anticipating even more. They include a brilliant opportunity to organise an unforgettable weekend with friends at the Berrilee Ridge Sanctuary valued at $5000. In addition a stunning gold sapphire ring is available and a $1000 custom designed Harbour Cruise for 4 people put together by Peter Smith. Prizes range in value from $80 to $5000 and there is a 50% reserve on each. The silent auction will be managed for us by the platform 32auctions and will operate from 7/10 to 4/11.
Details so far - here - for your review

Bob and Janelle expressed their deep appreciation of, and gratitude to, Mariela who, though not a member of Rotary, has spearheaded the selection and management of the onsite platform and has given hours of her time to developing the silent auction for us.

Before finishing Bob called on Phillip Comfort to outline a very worthwhile youth support programme in the Community organised through a joint initiative called - "Blue Sky" - more details are supplied  - here - for your appreciation.

Bob concluded the presentation for the Youth Committee by urging anyone who has questions in respect to the fundraising initiatives above or offers of help to contact the organisers below, as they are counting on us all.

Here is the list of contacts you may need when you have any questions, click on the names below.

A Trivia night with a difference
Our long awaited online Trivia night was held last Saturday  - many enjoyed the camaraderie with fellow members for the first time in 6 months as they gathered in small groups at a Team leaders home for a meal or via Zoom, while participating in a somewhat challenging evening. The cream rose to the top and the others just enjoyed the fun. Ed.

Anne Prescott and the International Committee

We all think that the Rotary Club of Wahroonga is a really great Club, and in the last 3 weeks I have seen the Club at work!

The event raised close to $3600 incl. donations and pledges on the night

As soon as it became obvious that I wasn’t going to be able to organise and run the Trivia night, Janelle Speight, Simon Clegg, Stuart Armstrong, Doug Reid and Annette Baggie took over the organisation and running of the night - I’m sure there were others but I don’t know them all. The zoom part of the evening allowed many people to participate who would not normally be able to – they came from Britain, Perth, around the state and across Sydney.

Last night we gathered in our homes (or hospital room in my case) with computers ready, food in place, Dr Google turned off, ready to answer questions. The teams were finally able to meet together and 5 sets of 10 questions asked. There were some hassles with Round 2, so it was ignored in the count – personally that was terrible as we got all the questions correct!! The winners were tied – Pauline Kohlhoff and family, Anne and Warren Poole, and Stuart Prescott, Judy Hart, Mina Benzie, David Benzie and his mate and me – I promise I obeyed the 4 Way Test – I did not see the questions beforehand.

Our three charities – Making Days for Girls kits (Nepal), Special needs kids learning about recycling (India), Scholarships to keep kids in school (Cambodia) – were very well supported by the Trivia Night.

So, on behalf of our charities, thank you to everyone!!!!!"

Saturday October 24th: casual BYO lunch in Wahroonga Park.

Bring or buy your lunch, bring something to sit on and join whatever size group is legal for a casual get together. Meet at 12pm. Cancelled if raining (or you can go if you want to!).

Saturday 5th December: Christmas party with a difference!

Host or attend a member’s house for a Christmas party for 6 to 8 people per household. You can organise your own group or ask me to put you in a group.
Everyone brings a plate and a bottle to share: the rest is up to individual groups! The key is to take lots of photos and send them to Ian Cameron for a   Wahroongler montage for all to see! More details to come.

Look forward to seeing you all!

The Masketeers -  Fundraiser
Well! It’s been a bit of strange year for all of us and we know the fundraising efforts of all clubs and charities have been terribly impacted, as everyone tries to predict the future.

This horrid Pandemic has certainly brought out the 'resilience and creativity' in some people and I think we all want to add value to our community in some small way.

So, I decided to approach some of the more experienced sewers in the group and asked them if they would like to help me make 200 face masks.

Believe me, it was no mean task, when you consider making a medical grade face mask takes about 30 mins and that’s not including cutting 6 pieces of fabric for each mask.
But, with the help from Jan Cameron, Margaret Broadhead, Joan Giacometti, Jo-Anne Moffat, Ann Davison and a great friend of  Joyce Collins, Cynthia Cohen supporting, we are on our way to completing the task in readiness to sell them ALL on
Saturday 3rd Oct in 2 locations.

Some of our sewers in action - see Photo Album

We will have a table outside the Pottery Green Bakery on Eastern Road, Turramurra and another in Wahroonga village, opposite the zebra crossing. We do need volunteers for selling the masks please, so if you have a couple of hours spare on the Saturday between 9am - 3pm I would really appreciate your support.

Please select a time slot and register here: Event Volunteering

Once again, a huge thank you to all the beautiful women who helped me create these masks and I’m really looking forward to having lots of fun selling them to the community. We’re hoping to raise $3,000 for the Youth Committee.

Council is running a webinar for parents of teenagers to help them to check in with their teenagers to see if they are ok

This event has been prompted by the recent and tragic suicides we have had within Ku-ring-gai over the last few weeks. It has been a really hard year for students, especially senior students, so this workshop has been developed to give parents tools to connect with their teens to find out if their teens are ok. The session will be hosted by a psychologist who will discuss the signs and symptoms of when teens may not be ok. She will also explain how you can meaningfully connect with your teens so that when you ask them if they are ok, you have a better chance of them opening up. This is a fee webinar run via zoom.

Many of us have time and always happy to learn new things

This may be worth your time to learn about this debilitating condition that seems to be on the rise in the older age groups (but not only)
